We are very proud that the municipality of Groningen has chosen a Hungarian product, PLATIO for its solar path, and that this innovative energy-generating tile will contribute to the city's ambition to be CO2 neutral by 2035.
On 24 March 2023, Groningen Alderman for Energy Philip Broeksma opened the EU’s new, 400m2 solar footpath in the city of Groningen. It is a sustainable walkway created using 2544 PLATIO solar pavers that generate approximately 53,000 kWh of electricity per year. The clean energy powers the townhall and the surrounding buildings. The solar path is located on the Kolenkade, the street where previously coal used to be brought for energy. PLATIO pavers are doubly sustainable as they are made from recycled plastic.
András Sebok, CEO of PLATIO Solar, introduced this unique solar building material at the opening ceremony, which was attended by Hungarian Honorary Consul Seerp Leistra in Groningen and Trade Attaché Edit Pápai, among others.
The walkway is part of the European Union's ’Making City’ project which aims to develop Positive Energy Districts (PED), demonstrating the potential of innovative solutions to tackle climate-neutral goals.
