In solidarity with the Hungarian freedom fighters, the Netherlands, along with Spain and Switzerland, decided to boycott the 1956 Melbourne Olympics protesting against the Soviet intervention in Hungary. The noble decision had dramatic consequences for a generation of outstanding Dutch athletes, who were bereft of a dream.
60 years after, Hungary thanked these great women and men with a special ceremony dedicated to them.
