Péter Esterházy, one of Hungary’s most renowned writers passed away on 14 July in Budapest.
Esterházy became an emblematic author of postmodernism thanks to the playful nonchalance of his style, testing boundaries between texts and reality, profanity and Christian philosophy, capitalising on both pathos and ridiculousness of European and personal history with unprecedented bravery.
Poised to defy all authorities while being bound by his humanistic morale, fascinated by a declining aristocratic ancestry in an era of social and cultural transformation, he developed a unique prose that he regarded as one re-writing itself.
His epic literary struggle with a transcendent father figure counterpointed by his irony unexpectedly transformed him into a solid point of reference. A father figure for contemporary literature, Péter Esterházy will be remembered, challenged, loved and mourned.
