The Embassy - Embassy of Hungary

The Embassy

Dear Visitor,

Welcome to the official website of the Embassy of Hungary accredited to the Kingdom of the Netherlands and our Permanent Representation to the International Organisations in The Hague.

Although Hungary and the Kingdom of the Netherlands are separated by several national borders, our shared history, cultural, and social ties have connected us for centuries. Hungarian-Dutch cooperation is active and remarkably diverse in everyday life: the arts, science, commerce, and a mutual curiosity about each other’s cultures form a strong bridge between our two nations.

Since the 17th century, hundreds of Hungarian students have set out to study at prestigious Dutch universities, and today, the Netherlands remains one of the most popular destinations for Hungarian students. In Hungary, we also remember the 17th-century Dutch admiral, Michiel de Ruyter, as a hero for freeing Hungarian Protestant preachers from galley slavery. Our ties were further strengthened by the storms of the 20th century. Following the First World War, as part of the "children's train" program, around 30,000 Hungarian children found temporary homes with Dutch families. When tens of thousands of freedom fighters had to flee Hungary in 1956, during the Hungarian Revolution and Freedom Fight, the Netherlands welcomed many Hungarian refugees, expressing its solidarity. We are grateful for the solidarity of the Dutch people and proud that the Hungarians who settled here have contributed to the success and prosperity of the Netherlands with their hard work and talent.

The city of The Hague, which hosts our mission, is one of the most international cities in the Netherlands. Our key responsibility is to support cooperation with international organisations, enhance the representation of Hungarian interests, and promote the cause of peace and justice.

Our Embassy is dedicated to further strengthening the cooperation between our countries and building new bridges to open a new chapter in our relations. In doing so, we aim to engage the Hungarian community in the Netherlands, as well as Dutch citizens and foreign residents interested in Hungary and Hungarian culture. We remain committed to supporting initiatives that bring our citizens, businesses, and communities closer together.

We hope that you will find all the necessary information on our website. Please do not hesitate to contact us.
