Voluntary acknowledgement of paternity
General information
If the parents were not married when the child was born a voluntary acknowledgment of paternity is necessary for the registration of birth in Hungary. Voluntary acknowledgment of paternity may also be done before the birth of the child.
How to apply
In order to submit the application, you will need an appointment.
You have to come to the consulate in person.
Requirements for the procedure
-In view of the change in the relevant Dutch regulations effective from January 1, 2023, a declaration of paternity made in the Netherlands, accompanied by a certified Hungarian translation, is acceptable for the registration of the birth in Hungary.
-Please note! If the birth took place before January 1, 2023, regardless of the Dutch declaration of paternity, it is still necessary to make a full declaration of paternity at the embassy. In this case, please select the following in the appointment booking system: Paternity acknowledgment + birth registration + passport
ONLY for children born after January 1, 2023 – Dutch declaration of paternity, with a certified Hungarian translation.
ONLY for children born before January 1, 2023 – Protocol on paternity declaration completed for the child, but not signed
CHANGE! From March 15, 2024! A multilingual birth certificate alone is not sufficient!
- Original birth certificate of the child (uittreksel uit de geboorteakte or akte van geboorte) NOT SUFFICIENT ON ITS OWN!!!
- you MUST also bring the multilingual form (meertalig modelformulier vertaalhulp) issued by the competent Dutch authority (gemeente – Dutch local municipality) or a certified Hungarian translation.
- Parents' valid passport or identity card
- Original residence card of Hungarian citizen parents, if available
- In the case of a passport application, an official passport photo (pasfoto) for children under 6 years of age
Both parents should be present in person;
(Please note: In case of third country nationals only original passport is accepted. No photocopies are accepted.)
• Form (filled) in 1 copy
Please do not sign the form prior to the appointment, just make sure that all the relevant field are properly filled out with blue ink.
• Consular fee should be paid via debit card;
• If the mother’s marital status is divorced the divorce should be verified with a marriage certificate or a court order.
Further requirements for parents under 18
If the parents of the child are under 18 years old the legal representatives should appear in person at the Consulate at the procedure.
For the validity of the voluntary acknowledgment of paternity the father should be at least 16 years older than his child.
Procedure time
Copies of the acknowledgment shall be posted to the applicants within 10 working days from the appointment.
